Areas of Study

The Department of Art offers courses in five areas of concentration, including painting and drawing, printmaking, sculpture, digital media and graphic design. 

Students are encouraged to experiment and expose themselves to all of the various forms of media offered by the department. Learn more about them below.

Painting & Drawing

The painting and drawing area of study provides a foundation in the methods and materials of traditional media and supports advanced work that reflects the vitality and breadth of contemporary practice.

The print media area of focus offers contemporary approaches to the core traditional practices of lithography, etching, screen printing and relief.

Art majors studying sculpture enjoy state-of-the-art studio facilities that support a variety of mediums, including wood-, stone-, and metal-working.

Courses in digital media focus on exposing students to the means in which digital technology can be brought to bear on fine arts practices.

Graphic Design

The design concentration offered through UMD’s Department of Art allows students to engage with a vibrant design community in the nation’s capital. Students accepted into this program have the opportunity to apply for area-specific scholarships.
