Irene Pantelis is a Bolivian-Uruguayan-American interdisciplinary artist based in the Washington D.C. area. Inspired by Latin America’s magic realism, her work portrays intimate moments, engaging narratives of identity, memory, displacement and ecology derived from diverse mythological, historical and cultural events, as well as natural phenomena and daily life. A former labor lawyer, she obtained a BA and an MFA from the University of Maryland at College Park. She is a recipient of the Maryland Federation of Arts American Landscapes Juror’s Choice Award (2018), the Sadat Art for Peace Award (2018), the UMD Visualizing Migration Graduate Award (2017), and the Mattie Kelley Arts Center’s Emerald Coast Best in Show Award (2020). Her experimental shorts have been featured in film festivals around the world, including the Cannes Film Awards in France (2021).
