Convergence: The Intersection of Art, Science, and Engineering at UMD
Convergence: The Intersection of Art, Science, and Engineering at UMD
This exhibit is on view through November 15. Maril Gallery is open to the public Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Convergence features large-scale prints, video, and sculpture developed from scientific and engineering research across UMD and beyond. The show includes a range of compelling visuals, from NASA images of astronauts testing equipment to hypersonic wind tunnel photography. Visitors will also encounter wearable robots designed for dance, imagery and video related to Arctic cyclones, and electron microscopy. An interactive video installation will explore concepts in quantum theory. Together, these works invite visitors to engage with scientific phenomena that shape our understanding of the natural world and consider the role of art in communicating complex ideas.
The selected works highlight the intersection of aesthetic and technical dimensions inherent in scientific investigation and engineering design. This collection provides a space to consider how research visuals can function as data, knowledge production and artistic expression, sparking new discussions between artists, scientists, and engineers. With contributions from NASA, Harvard, and UMD researchers, Convergence fosters interdisciplinary engagement and broadens the conversation around how visual artifacts contribute to knowledge exchange and collaboration across academic fields.
