Pouring Molten iron

Department of Art Iron Pour - Spring 2022

Art Saturday, April 9, 2022 10:00 am - 6:00 pm Parren J. Mitchell Art/Sociology Building, Sculpture Yard - South-west side of the buidling

Spring 2022 Department of Art Iron Pour:

Every semester, our sculpture students come together over a weekend to create cast-iron sculptures. The day begins by firing up our outdoor furnace capable of melting one thousand pounds of iron at a time. Once it's up to temperature our students and faculty feed it iron, bringing it to the melting point. Once ready, they pour this molten iron into individual molds. After they have cooled, the molds are opened to reveal the metal sculptures inside.  This is an all-day event and is open for public viewing from a safe distance.

Events begin at 10:00AM and run through late afternoon.

Interested in casting? Artists, students and educators from around the region are invited to participate. Contact Prof. John Ruppert: ruppertj@umd.edu
